Since taking up the position of Artistic Director of New Haven Ballet in 2001, Phillip Otto has produced both the full-length Nutcracker you see here, created especially for performance at the Shubert Theater, and the community outreach program Discover Dance-New Haven, which had its debut performance at the Shubert in May 2002, as part of New Haven Ballet’s educational celebration of dance, featuring students of New Haven Ballet, local amateur and professional dance groups, and guest artists from American Ballet Theatre.
Born in New York City, Mr. Otto trained at the School of American Ballet, American Ballet Theatre School, and the Joffrey School, among others. As a child he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera’s children’s chorus and danced with New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, London’s Royal Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet, and the Bolshoi Ballet. As an adult Mr. Otto danced principal and soloist roles with the Milwaukee Ballet, the Pennsylvania Ballet, and Pacific Northwest Ballet. After retiring as a soloist from Pacific Northwest Ballet in 1996, Mr. Otto joined the faculty of the Pacific Northwest Ballet School and went on to direct the student company as well as the company’s outreach and educational programs, for which he was nominated for the state of Washington’s Golden Apple Award for excellence in education. In addition to directing New Haven Ballet, Mr. Otto serves as permanent guest faculty at the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet and has a teaching relationship with the Yale Dancers and Vassar College.
