Copenhagen City Ballet is a youth ensemble founded in 1992 by Astra Sterns. Copenhagen City Ballet, as a semi-professional company was originally founded in 1978, among the professional dancers were Anne Kennedy, Dennie Frank, Tommy Edvardsen, Kurt Bendtson.
Among the guest choreographers for the youth ensemble, have been: Ralph Grant, formerly with Dance Theater of Harlem, a.o., and Karina Elver, Royal Danish Ballet. Guest instructors have been: Lita Beiris, Riga National Ballet; Lis Jeppessen, Inge Jensen, Sorella Englund from the Royal Danish Ballet. Former young CCB dancers who have become professionals include: Anne Holm-Jensen, Anja Hummel, Anne Panjwani, Naomi Luppescu, Katinka Kragh, Anna Thagesen, Celeste Mackeprang.
CCB has performed on various Danish television programs in 1982, 1991 and 1994. In Copenhagen CCB has performed at Bellevue Theater (jan. 1983); at Betty Nansen Theater: Prins Henrik’s 60th birthday, arranged by Prince Henrik’s School (may 1994); at Tivoli’s Concert Hall: “Ballet Galla Riga” (in Latvia known by the name: International Ballet Evening at Tivoli), an international benefit gala, idea by Astra Sterns, who was also the Gala’s artistic director (dec. 9th 1995); at Tivoli’s “Plaenen” (june 1996). CCB has also been on tour to Riga, Latvia: performing at Dailes Theater for Riga Ballet’s 70th anniversary (feb 1973) and again at Dailes Theater (oct. 1994). Furthermore CCB was invited to participate in the 1st and 2nd International Baltic Ballet Festivals, Riga (may 1996 and may 1997), directed by Lita Beiris, with performances at the Riga Congress Hall as well as in the cities of Daugavpils, Liepaja and Ventspils. In addition, two CCB dancers were invited to perform at the Riga Opera House, together with young dancers from the Riga School of Choreography (Rigas Horeografijas Vidusskola), at the premiere of a special production of Bournonville’s “La Sylphide” (jan. 2001) and also in Bournonville’s “The Conservatory” (may 2002) where both times Astra Sterns participated as guest instructor from Denmark in the staging of the ballets for the school. CCB has also performed in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory Theater, arranged by the Danish Institute of Culture in St. Petersburg w/ Rikke Helms, april 15th 2006, as part of the city’s bicentenial celebration of H.C. Andersen. The program included “The Little Match Girl”, a one-act ballet, and “The Little Mermaid’s Dream”.
Since 1994 Copenhagen City Ballet has received grants/ subsidies for various projects and benefits from the following Danish Funds, both State and private; Danish Ministry of Culture,The Danish Cultural Institute in Copenhagen, Obel Fonden, Jork’s Fond, Politiken Fonden, Skandinavian Tobaco Co.’s Fund, Queen Margarethe’s and Prince Henrik’s Fund, Augustinus Fund, Maersk-McKinney Moeller Fund, Egmont Fund,Jyllands Postensfond,Tuborg Fund, Rotary Club in Denmark,
